Redefining The Concept Called Pan-Africanism

Coined by Henry Sylvester Williams as a response to racial discrimination and colonialism,Pan-Africanism has gotten different interpretations from different thinkers. While many sees it as a movement, others see it as the social, political and economic independence of African nations. Most importantly,a large group of people see it as the unification of African nations into a single African state.

Whichever one it is,it is important to know that Pan-Africanism is a broad idea and it focuses on the cultural unity, political liberation and global solidarity of Africa and people of African descent.

However, let's take a minute to ask ourselves the true meaning of the term,"Pan-Africanism". What exactly is the term Pan-Africanism? Does this definition or these definitions,as the case maybe, reflect the true identity and the current happenings in Africa?

W. E. B. Du Bois describes Pan-Africanism as the belief that all people of African descent-on the continent and in the diaspora-share common interests and should unite. He emphasized intellectual cooperation and political unity among Black people worldwide.

Renowned activist and Ghanian leader, Kwame Nkrumah, described Pan-Africanism as a movement from colonial rule and establishing independent African states.

According to him, Pan-Africanism should lead to a united political Africa, even proposing a single African government.

Marcus Garvey, however, defined Pan-Africanism as the idea that Africans should control their own economies and revive their cultural identity. His view promoted Black pride, economic independence and the "Back to Africa" movement.

George Padmore describes Pan-Africanism as a global struggle against racism, oppression and exploitation of Black people". His view focused on organizing workers and colonized people against imperialism.

These definitions are geared towards the development of the African people. But does it address the current issues in Africa? The answer is NO.

Africa is plagued by war, neocolonialism and ethnic crisis. And if we must address these issues,we must first look into the definition of Pan-Africanism.

In my novel, Shattered Dreams, the new country created by the colonial masters-Alasamba-experiences this same issue. The country is plaqued by neocolonialism, war and ethnic crisis. A shift in ideology was all that could save them. It contributed to a successful revolution in the country.

For Africa to move past this situation,it needs a shift in ideology. Africa needs to define Pan-Africanism.

This is my new definition of Pan-Africanism:

Pan-Africanism is the respect accorded to the different nations in Africa, which will foster the development, social, political and economic independence of the continent. It gives Africa a leverage and the power to develop in its own pace, which will foster the overall growth of Africa".

Africa needs a shift in ideology. And the shift in ideology starts in the mindset.
