TRUMP'S AMERICA AND TINUBU'S NIGERIA

Every country has its own weaknesses and problems. It all depends on how the government of the country handles it.

In late 2025, US congressmen, French Hill(Republican- Arkansas) and Tom Suozzi (Democrat- New York) led a bipartisan letter to the US secretary of state, asking for the immediate designation of Nigeria as a "Country of Particular Concern", citing Nigeria's security situation and the government's inability to protect religious communities and groups and attacks on the christian community in the Northern Nigeria.

On October 2025, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, officially designated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern(CPC) and thereby, ordered airstrikes to be launched on Islamic militants in Northern Nigeria on December 2025.

The government of Nigeria, led by president Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, however debunked the claim, calling it a "faulty data". The government claimed that the killings in Northern Nigeria was characterized by terrorism rather than religious intolerance.

It is important to note that this decision by the government of the United States of America gave Nigeria a bad impression on the international stage. It led to the infringement in the rights of Nigeria as a sovereign nation. Most importantly,it led to sanctions from international communities and Nigerians were perceived as victims of war.

However, while the president of USA, Donald Trump, ordered for the immediate military action against the Islamic militants in Northern Nigeria,it is important we ask this question,"IS AMERICA SAFE ENOUGH?" Is the United States of America secure enough.

Gun violence has been a long standing public health and emergency issue in America. It has led to the death of thousands of Americans including children and adolescents. In 2023, nearly 47,000 people died from gun related injuries. This is according to the official CDC data analyzed by Pew Research Centre.

These gun related injuries include suicides, homicides, law enforcement shootings and undetermined cases.

BREAKDOWN OF GUN DEATH CATEGORIES.

✅ Suicide ~27,300( about 58% of the gun death cases.

✅ Homicide ~17,927( about 38%)

✅ The rest include cases from law enforcement, accidents and undetermined cases.

Gun violence is also the major causes of death of teenagers and adolescents in the US.

Mass shootings also make up the bulk of the gun death categories. However, mass shootings were not consistently reported in 2025. Therefore, they was a low record of cases of mass shootings.

With this,it is clear that the United States of America, which is considered the "world power", is also plagued by issues of insecurity. What can you say about a country where you can't take a walk without fear of someone opening fire?

However, the main lesson to learn is how proactive Donald Trump handles Matters Of Particular Concern. While the Tinubu administration continued gallivanting and frolicking, the Trump led administration has
been serious with the affairs and issues concerning the American people. He guides the image of the American government like his own personal property.

On late February 2026, the United States and Israel launched a military operation against Iran, killing the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamanei.

This is supposedly a country where teenagers die every day from gun violence in schools and public places.

America keeps playing the supremacy role in the world while her home is on fire.

But what really amazes me is how diplomatic the Trump's led administration has been. Comparing Trump and the president of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu,it is really shameful to say that while the former prioritizes matters of national interest, the latter keeps playing politics with the wellbeing of his people.

This could be easily noticed during the heightened insecurity situation in the Northern Nigeria. Government actors and non-actors kept issuing statements on how the government has been working to solve the insecurity situation in the Northern Nigeria. Unfortunately, no result was seen. It was just one of those empty political statements from political officials. However, fortunately and unfortunately for Nigerians, the United States of America sprung into action. It is fortunate because the involvement of the United States government led to sporadic action of the Nigerian government. But it is quite unfortunate because it placed boundaries on the sovereignty of Nigeria.

  1. Please note that the mention of Iran in this opinion piece is basically to buttress the writer's point. It does not in anyway reflect his opinion about America's and Israel's military operation against Iran.
